Yakuzen is a Japanese term for Food Therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine. “Yaku” refers to Chinese herbs or medicine, and “Zen” means dish. However, it doesn’t necessarily involve cooking with bitter Chinese herbs. Instead, Yakuzen primarily utilizes ingredients commonly found in grocery stores to prepare everyday meals. It is not medicine, so Yakuzen dishes should be delicious and flavorful, and most importantly, enjoyable to eat.
Yakuzen is to help us maintain health, prevent and treat illnesses. What you choose to eat has profound effects on your health and longevity. We often focus too much on what nutrients we should intake, such as protein, carbs, vitamins and so on. However, we barely think about or know some other aspects of the food we eat.
What is Yakuzen?
Everyday ingredients are Everyday ingredients are not just carbs or protein
Each food has its unique shape, taste and smell along with its properties. It is not just about carbs or proteins; it also has other distinctive aspects. For example, watermelon consists mostly of water (about 90%). At first glance, it may not seem to provide much nutrition. However, in Yakuzen, we believe watermelon can prevent heat stroke during the very hot and humid summers in Japan. This is because watermelon can reduce the heat in the body and remove excess water, which causes heaviness or swelling.

Yakuzen is goal-oriented
We often say that we are what we eat. We cannot live without eating or drinking water for so long. The energy that enables us to move, see, grab, walk, speak and think comes from what we consume. The blood that nourishes and flaws throughout the body also comes from what we eat.
Learning the properties of each food, choosing and combining foods and cooking meals according to the season you live in or your body type are the keys to enjoying healthy life and longevity.
